Mini Exhibits are featured at each monthly club meeting of the Suffield Garden Club. Members may submit up to three entries, one per category.

The Mini Exhibits committee (and sometimes outside judges) will rate entries against a set of standards, not each other. Or the Popular Vote may decide how the entries fare!

Drop off entries 30 minutes before the start of each meeting.

Members: See specific guidelines for each category in your yearbooks.



OCTOBER

Artistic Design
One variety of mums in a design compatible container, not to exceed 12".  Can be any design style.

Horticulture
One ornamental cabbage flower plant in a pot or planter. State plant/variety on a 3 x 5 card or paper with your name on the back. 

Photography                   
Autumn Leaves:  Fall is the time of colorful change, let's show it off in its brilliance.



NOVEMBER

Artistic Design
Using fruits and/or vegetables only, create a line design.  Dominant feature is a thrusting movement in a single direction, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally.  

Horticulture
Three different-looking, ornamental gourds displayed on a dish or in a basket. State items on a 3 x 5 card or paper with your name on the back.

Photography
Patriotic Colors:  Let us never forget our Veterans, any patriotic picture will do.

DECEMBER

Artistic Design
Creative,original wreath design, not to exceed 12" in diameter.

Horticulture
One Christmas Cactus in bloom. State plant/variety on a 3 x 5 card or paper with your name on the back.

Photography
Holiday Celebration Family traditions become the memories of our future, what is your favorite?

JANUARY
No Exhibits 



FEBRUARY

Artistic Design
Our annual "Posies-to-Go" program for shut-ins. Please provide a bag or box for transportation.

Horticulture
One 24" winter evergreen branch. State type of evergreen on a 3 x 5 card or paper with your name on the back.

Photography                   
Winter White Snow is so difficult to photograph, past or present picture, show us your best.

*Identify entry/material with your name on the back of an index card.



MARCH

Artistic Design
A multi-rhythmic design with plant material of your choice.  Lines may be straight, curvilinear, cross over each other or zigzag.

Horticulture
One terrarium. List the plants(s) on a 3 x 5 card or paper with your name on the back. 

Photography
Spring Awakening:  We all hope for  the first sign of spring, be it bird, flower or bud.  Can you catch a photo of one?



APRIL

Artistic Design
Small table design for a 2 person dinner;  1 place setting.

Horticulture 
On flowering spring branch.

Photography
April Showers:  Rain can dampen our spirits or put rain drops on a photo.  Any rainy day photo will do.



MAY (Drop off 9:30 a.m.)

Artistic Design
Mini arrangement including 1 or more paper clips, not to exceed 5" in any direction.

Horticulture
Your hand-made, grapevine design of your choice. State design of item on a 3 x 5 card or paper with your name on the back.

Women Botanical Artists
with Pat Carr 

Patricia Carr will provide a glimpse into the lives and work of Women Botanical Artists 1700-1990.  Frequent lecturer on gardening and fine art and with a love for history, Patricia states, 'Mrs. Delany, Marianne North ... and Margaret Mee may not be household names, but their superb paintings and drawings of flowers are all to be found in museum and botanical garden collections.'  She is currently a docent at the Yale Center for British Art.

Please bring a non-perishable food item for those in need who are helped by Suffield Emergency Aid.

Holiday Arrangements
with Bob Whitney

favorite presenter at SGC, Bob Whitney will once again dazzle us with holiday arrangements, both traditional and unexpected.   Bob has 34 years in the floral industry, working in retail, education, and wholesale.  He has been a member of the American  Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) for 24 years.  Bob also has participated in floral design contests for Teleflora and FTD, as well as been a judge for FTD and the CT Florist Association.

Herb Gardening from the Ground Up
with Sal Gilbertie

A leader in the herb industry, Sal Gilbertie is the owner of Gilbertie’s Herb Gardens in Easton, CT, the largest herb plant grower in the nation.  Gilbertie’s Herbs produces two million organically-grown herb plants annually.

Sal will focus on the history of herbs of yesterday as well as those of today & tomorrow.  He will review cultivation techniques that lead to successful results.  Samples of new herb varieties will be shared.

What You Really Need to Know to Enter a Flower Show
with Brenda Connor

Translation: I’m scared, how do I get over the fear of entering a flower show??  Come learn everything you need to know to enter an arrangement in our upcoming fall Flower Show.  Brenda Connor is a certified Federation judge who has won multiple prizes at shows around the state, including the State Flower Show.  She has entered competitions for the past 10-12 years.

Mixed Borders: Taking Advantage of Everything Out There
with Rita Bond

Simsbury based Rita Bond has been a landscape designer concentrating on residential design, lecturer, and teacher of gardening courses for more than 10 years.  Amongst her designs are the gardens for the CT Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford.  Her presentation will show us how to shake things up when creating gardens by mixing a bit of this with a bit of that.

Margery Winters returns to our club to speak on what you can do to make your yard more attractive to our feathered friends.  Margery is the Assistant Director of the Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton.

Black Gold: Indoor Composting with Worms
with Martha Hamilton

Martha Hamilton, a Master Gardener from Western Massachusetts, will teach us how to make "black gold" right on our kitchen counters in a presentation she made at the 2010 Master Gardeners Symposium.
Martha is past president of Springfield Garden Club and a board member of The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. She is a flower arranger, artist and interior designer.

Developing & Testing Skills for Floral Careers
with Students from Suffield Regional Agriscience Center
Location: Suffield High School
We will be guests of the Regional Agriscience Center at Suffield High School. Students will highlight their preparation for the FFA Career Development Event (CDE) and explain the purpose of CDE’s. Members will test their own skills by making a corsage, identifying flowers and taking a written test. Are you up for the challenge?

Festive Flowers
with Mary Huntoon

Mary Huntoon, an award-winning floral designer, will entertain us as she makes festive arrangements for the holidays. Her goals for the presentation include our enjoyment and entertainment, as well as our increased love and knowledge of floral design. Mary is a master judge for National Garden Clubs, Inc., and judge in horticulture and design for The Garden Club of America, Inc.


Arrangements will be raffled after the program! Guest fee, $10.

Terrariums and You
with Tovah Martin

Tovah Martin's passion for all things growing and encased in glass led to her 2009 book, The New Terrarium, wherein she writes, “If your home décor needs a little extra green, try a terrarium. Quite simply, terrariums are the solution for bringing all the benefits of botany and you together.” Tovah is an award-winning author of more than 12 books, garden writer and Honorary Member of The Garden Club of America, Inc. Flowers for the President and You
with Ruth Loiseau

Suffield resident Ruth Loiseau is a nationally recognized master floral designer and the owner of Ruth L. She has worked at the White House since the Reagan Administration and continues to help with special events there. She will regale us with her White House experiences while designing eight floral arrangements. Ruth lectures in The Art of Floral Design and has an extensive list of clients throughout the United States. She was the keynote speaker at the 2010 Bouquets to Art event at The de Young Museum in San Francisco.

Arrangements will be raffled after the program!

Daylilies 101
with Richard Howard

Richard Howard, past president of the Connecticut Daylily Society, will explain types of daylilies, discuss their cultural requirements, and show examples of newer cutting-edge varieties that will knock your socks off! Rich’s two-acre home in Wallingford, Connecticut, boasts 4,000 pots of daylilies in 1,800 varieties. He has been hybridizing his own daylilies for about 10 years. The American Hemerocallis Society awarded him Display Garden approval in 2003.

Benefits of Pollination with Local Bees
with Tony Bermani

Suffield beekeeper and TCBee Farm owner, Tony Bermani will give us an overview of honeybee biology and discuss the process of pollination. Tony maintains over 100 honeybee colonies.

TCBee Farm honey will be available for purchase after the program.

Following the program we will hold our annual business meeting to plan for 2012-2013.

 Monthly Meetings     (Guests welcome)
Regular meetings are held the first Monday of each month October - May (excluding January) beginning at 11:45 a.m. At each meeting, we address club business, and learn from guest speakers as well as each other (see info on Mini Exhibits at right). We enjoy a light luncheon beforehand. Each May, we hold our annual business meeting, approve a budget and plan for the following year.

A selection of gardening materials including books, gloves, oasis and other items are offered for sale to members and guests at our meetings.

Monthly meetings are held at Second Baptist Church, 100 N. Main St., Suffield CT, unless otherwise noted. Click the orange marker below for directions.





 Guests
Guests are welcome at monthly meetings up to three times per year. Fee per visit, $5.  December guest fee, $10. 



 Annual Meeting
The annual meeting in June is held off-site and is for members only. 

Club members gather for an afternoon of camaraderie and celebration featuring hors d'oeuvres and cocktails (cash bar) followed by a luncheon. We elect new officers, present awards and recognize members for their years of service.

The location of the annual meeting may vary from year to year.
